Labor Day

In honor of Labor Day, here is a meme about....labor! Check out Rocks in My Dryer for more stories.

How long were your labors?

Kid #1, 9 1/2 hours

Kid #2 Almost 24 hours

How did you know you were in labor?

Kid #1, terrible gas that turned out not to be gas.

Kid #2, the pitocin going through my IV was an indication...

Where did you deliver?

At the hospital.

Drugs?

Oh yes. With kid #1 I arrived at the hospital asking for an epidural. I was only 3cm dilated, but they humored me anyway, God bless those nurses. With kid #2 I was determined to last a bit longer and was actually doing okay with stadol (a lovely, lovely drug) until things went wrong and I had to have an epidural and a c-section.

C-section?

Not with kid #1, but #2 was a different story. I was induced, and after about 20 hours I was lying in bed, happily drugged up with stadol, when I was awakened by lots of sudden movements--it felt like something terrible had happened. Then I felt a gush of something, which I thought was my water breaking, but turned out to be a bunch of blood. That ended the labor--I got an epidural and a c-section--Mr. S. later told me it was like an episode of ER--rushing through the halls with doctors yelling. I don't remember much, thankfully!

Who delivered?

Doctors. With kid #1 it was a doctor who I knew from our practice, and who I adored. With kid #2 it was a doctor from my practice who I liked, joined by one I despised. Doctor Despised was the one who questioned any medication I was given--"why do you need that? You're not in pain!"...."um, your colleauge, Dr. B., prescribed it...apparently she thought it was necessary..." He was a big pain.

Wow, the second doctor doesn't sound too nice! Thanks for sharing! I am due in less than 4 weeks and have had fun reading all these stories thanks to RIMD. My friends are leaving advice for me on our blog this week if you'd like to stop by and share some words of wisdom! :)
